    Winter wonderland

    country bedroom

Create your very own winter wonderland in a country bedroom with a wealth of the softest silvery greys and snowy whites that complement the first snowdrops.

Here, a beautiful rustic backdrop of exposed stone and weathered wood sets the scene for crisp whites to sing out, with floral cushions and a stunning patchwork quilt incorporating florals (Burford quilt and Burford cushion covers from The White Company) hinting at spring to come.

The focal point is the Suffolk bed (from The White Company), which combines a curved and winged headboard for an elegant country feel, and is shown here in a linen union woven in Lancashire by the suppliers of Ian Mankin textiles.

Give the scheme a contemporary edge with a cube side table and add to the mix a chic oak bench at the foot of the bed for handy storage, then soften stone flooring with a kilim rug in a soothing soft grey. (Cube side table, ceramic bottle lamp, oak bench, Pimlico bedlinen and Kew Kilim rug all The White Company).

    Summertime seating

    country living room

Here’s a super pretty country living room that’s just right for summer, mirroring the colours and blooms of the garden beautifully.

It’s a fabulous example of how to use a neutral backdrop – off-white walls and rug, plus elegant neutral painted furniture – then introduce colour and pattern with furniture and fabric.

The gorgeous green sofa (the Chatsworth, upholstered in Willoughby 01, from The Dormy House) provides a stylish mainstay of the scheme.  Its opulent buttoned back ensures it ticks the box as regards classic good looks, while the subtle striped upholstery fabric injects a modern touch. A neutral ottoman, with a buttoned lid (in Cirrus 03,  from The Dormy House), continues the button detail and makes an eyecatching centrepiece, providing plenty of concealed storage.

Liven up the scheme with joyful co-ordinating fabrics – both florals, stripes and windowpane checks – for an individual and eclectic interior. Flowing floorlength curtains make a delightful frame for the windows, while the tones are picked up in the cushions and the bold floral design of the statement armchair. Add into the mix the smart striped Lounge chair Portland Stripe 02 from The Dormy House and you have all the ingredients of a quirky and distinctive look.

    Ashley Wilde floral living room

With the flower show season on the horizon – RHS Chelsea Flower Show takes place next week – we’re really in the mood for everything floral.

And this gorgeous country living room, decked out in classic floral fabrics, is perfect for creating a summery look that’s straight out of the garden. The intricate handpainted designs, appropriately enough from the Hampton Court collection by Ashley Wilde, will work well in either a classic or contemporary space, and come in a lavender, forget-me-not, rose, lemon or summer palette.

To show off the fabrics to their best advantage, partner them with a neutral backdrop and tease out the accent colour, such as lavender as shown here, with blinds or cushions in a toning shade and in a quintessentially country polka dot design.

Painted furniture complements this look beautifully – choose a distressed coffee table and use it to display pretty posies in milk bottle vases or vintage bottles for a rustic edge. Then add extra elegance with a French-style crested overmantel mirror to reflect light back into the room and help keep the look bright and airy.

    Where coast and country meet

Country living room Country Days blog Country Homes and Interiors

Seaside holidays may be a fading memory but we love a hint of coastal style in a country living room at Country Days.

Here’s a way to combine the best of both – emulate the light and airy feel of seaside properties by painting panelling white and introduce chalky blue country fabrics such as pretty florals and cosy toning plaids that herald the onset of autumn. (Fabrics from the Ellingham Collection by Linwood.)

The laid-back simplicity of a coastal scheme is reflected in the rush matting that adds texture underfoot, while wooden birds and a pebble mirror provide the perfect nautical finishing touches.

Amazing how a pop of pastels gets you in the mood for spring, and a country dining room can easily be given a seasonal facelift with just a few well-chosen pieces.

Here, a classic country scheme  with elegant French-style dining table and chairs is given an update for spring with pretty curtains featuring birds perched on leafy branches and brought to life with upholstered dining chairs in sugar almond shades (all from Laura Ashley).

    Wallpaper by Deborah Bowness

    by  • 28/09/2012 • Country style • 0 Comments

Earlier this week I went along to Decorex to view all the latest products, wallpaper and fabric collections from the world of interiors – it’s a great way to get inspired for our spring decorating stories. One stand in particular that caught my attention was Deborah Bowness with her uplifting display of stunning floral wallpapers.

Deborah is renowned for her brilliant collection of Trompe L’oeil designs featuring vintage inspired homewares, from floor lamps to shelves stacked with antique books. Hand made in Yorkshire using a combination of digital printing, silk-screen printing and free hand painting, every piece is unique giving her work its lovely artistic quality.

I’m a big fan of the Domino range, shown below, which are smaller panels of her designs that act as pieces of art rather than whole rolls of feature wallpaper – the concept being to create a bold statement without being overwhelming. I love how these pretty bouquets, from the Flora & Fauna collection, are shown in elegant gold frames – a great idea don’t you think?

    All things bright and beautiful…

    by  • 28/02/2012 • Country style • 2 Comments

I don’t know about you, but there is something so heartening about seeing a home filled with vibrant colours and bold patterns. All too often people feel restricted when it comes to decorating and as a consequence, choose something far removed from their personal taste simply because they think it is appropriate.  This beautiful living room features in Homespun Style by interiors stylist Selina Lake (£19.99, Ryland Peters & Small), and shows that you don’t have to choose a muted shade on the walls in order to complement a bold floral design on a sofa. On the contrary, the strong blue colour on the walls only enhances the sofa rather than overpowers it. Would you be tempted to go for something similar in your own home?

The pretty yet bold floral design on this sofa looks simply perfect against the vivid blue walls. Perfect for a contemporary country living room.

    Country kitchen you’ll love

    by  • 01/02/2012 • Country style • 2 Comments

I couldn’t agree more with the saying that ‘a kitchen is the heart of the home.’ Long gone are the days when all you did in it was prepare and cook meals. Today, people want it to be a multi-functional space, i.e. a room for entertaining, a possible play area for your kids, and simply, a place you feel good in. If you are fed up with the recent plummeting temperatures (I am!) and can’t wait for spring, you are sure to be inspired by Designers Guild new ‘Country collection,’ (pictured below). Using a mix of small-scale prints and ticking stripes, it is effortlessly fresh and undeniably feminine, perfect for any home. I’d be interested to hear what you think of it…
