    Christmas decorating

    by  • 30/11/2012 • Country style • 0 Comments

The countdown begins tomorrow, and I’m rather excited about entering into the spirit of Christmas this weekend! How many of you, like me, will be venturing up into the loft to dust off the box of heirloom baubles and decorations. Despite having our timeless favourites, it’s always nice to add a few new pieces each year to refresh your existing collection.

Having been inundated with gorgeous products since we started working on our Christmas issues back in July, I’ve had plenty of time to ponder my decorating plan of action for this year. I’ve decided to opt for a few of these vintage looking gems from The White Company, the soft golds and iridescent finishes are perfect to add a touch of decadence to my festive decorating scheme. For more seasonal inspiration don’t miss our January issue of Country Homes & Interiors, packed full of beautiful decorating ideas.

    Wallpaper by Deborah Bowness

    by  • 28/09/2012 • Country style • 0 Comments

Earlier this week I went along to Decorex to view all the latest products, wallpaper and fabric collections from the world of interiors – it’s a great way to get inspired for our spring decorating stories. One stand in particular that caught my attention was Deborah Bowness with her uplifting display of stunning floral wallpapers.

Deborah is renowned for her brilliant collection of Trompe L’oeil designs featuring vintage inspired homewares, from floor lamps to shelves stacked with antique books. Hand made in Yorkshire using a combination of digital printing, silk-screen printing and free hand painting, every piece is unique giving her work its lovely artistic quality.

I’m a big fan of the Domino range, shown below, which are smaller panels of her designs that act as pieces of art rather than whole rolls of feature wallpaper – the concept being to create a bold statement without being overwhelming. I love how these pretty bouquets, from the Flora & Fauna collection, are shown in elegant gold frames – a great idea don’t you think?

    Party Decorations

    by  • 01/06/2012 • Country style • 1 Comment

The excitement here at Country Homes & Interiors has been bubbling up all week — caused by a mixture of the lovely weather, the approaching Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the promise of half-term fun. For all of these reasons we are in party mode, and on that note on my wish list for this week are all the decorative trimmings you will need to see you through any summer celebrations.

The Hambledon has a great selection of colourful paper treats, from bright pom poms and feel-good word banners, to playful bunting and balloons! These smaller details are an easy way to instantly spread some cheer throughout your home, not forgetting the garden for any outdoor entertaining. Happy decorating for the Jubilee

Celebrate word banner, £9.95; Honeycomb paper balls, £3 each, Large pompom pack £18.50 set of 3; Paper confetti banner, £9.95; Paper animal balloons, £3, all from available at The Hambledon.

P.S Why not make them last, I had some pom poms up for a festive party and thought they looked so pretty that I decided to leave them up all year round!

    Summertime blues

    by  • 02/05/2012 • Country style • 0 Comments

Last summer we ‘sat spiritually’ upon a swing in a field in Gloucestershire and pondered the decorating features we would bring to you this summer. I loved rocking gently in the dappled light under the branches and I thought about cool indigo blues that felt shady and stylish. We took photographs of the swing seat, a fabulous design by Sitting Spiritually, and created our beautiful June issue cover (out now!).

We shot the rest of the decorating feature earlier this year mixing beautiful floral fabrics from Ralph Lauren and Jane Churchill at Colefax and Fowler and teamed it with blue glass and bed linens in relaxed ticking stripes. We hope you like the feature as much as we do. Take a look p.58-65, June issue.

What would be your dream farmhouse?

    by  • 21/03/2012 • Country style • 8 Comments

What does the word ‘farmhouse’ conjure up in your mind? Is it fresh eggs for breakfast, wooden beams or relaxed living? For me, I can’t help but think of living on a farmhouse as being akin with nature and having the freshest homegrown ingredients on your doorstep. In the beautiful new book Perfect English Farmhouse by Ros Byam Shaw (£30, Ryland Peters & Small), you will find farmhouses of contrasting styles and chapters are divided according to style: Organic, Traditional, Farm Fresh, No Frills and Funky. I particularly love the idea that this stylish home office used to be a sheep pen. It now looks anything but, and the old metal desk looks stunning against Cole & Son’s Hummingbirds wallpaper. Whether you live in a farmhouse now, or simply dream about living in one, this book will definitely provide you with plenty of inspiration. Let me know what you think. I would love to hear from you…

    Decorate with stencils

    by  • 11/01/2012 • Country craft • 0 Comments

If you’re looking for creative ways to decorate this year, take a look at this new book, Stencil It by Helen Morris (£20, Jacqui Small).

Stencils can be used to give a room a fresh update and decorative design without wallpaper and it’s a chance to get creative with templates and paint. Try adding pattern to a wall beside a bed, or brighten up an area next to a desk or bookcase.

The book includes advice on techniques and beautiful photographs show how to use stencils to create different styles – be inspired by elegant flowers, butterflies and classic architectural designs.

My favourites include pretty seeds painted as though drifting across a wall, numerals for a retro look in the study, and the Russian dolls would look sweet in a vintage-style kitchen.

The book has 15 stencils included at the back, so it’s easy to get started, just visit The Stencil Library to order paint and brushes.

Stencil It is available online now from Amazon.

Feeling inspired to try a new craft? I’d love to hear about your New Year craft projects…

    Perfect cottage bedroom

    by  • 17/11/2011 • Country style • 1 Comment

Nothing looks more perfect in a country bedroom than a nostalgic floral wallpaper. If you have dark beams, low ceilings or eaves, then a fresh and feminine design like this one is the perfect backdrop. Combine with a painted brass bed and vintage-style bedlinen for a comfortable and casual look. Just lovely…

We’ve fallen in love with Sanderson’s Ottoline wallpaper from its Autumn/Winter 2011 collection Bloomsbury, which was inspired by the creativity of artists, poets and designers of the 1930s. Beautiful new cobalt blue bedlinen

    by  • 09/11/2011 • Country style • 1 Comment

The big trend for Christmas this year is cobalt blue. We love this bedlinen by Designers Guild. It demonstrates that vibrant shades can work just as effectively in a country bedroom as pastel colours. For more ideas on ways to add decorative touches in rich jewel colours for your home, see our December issue.

How to create the perfect craft room

    by  • 12/01/2011 • Country craft, Country style • 3 Comments

I thought I’d share this video from Ellie Tennant, Deputy Shopping Editor on our sister title, Ideal Home, which has some lovely ideas on how to create the perfect craft room…

    [brightcove vid=642575600001&exp3=601212043001&surl=http://c.brightcove.com/services&pubid=8385557001&w=468&h=412]

If you’re feeling inspired, here’s our favourite craft-room buys:

For a multi-purpose craft room and study choose an L-shaped white desk (try Ikea) with a swivel chair (Ikea or John Lewis) and an Anglepoise lamp (John Lewis).

In a hobby room, cover a table top with a colourful oilcloth (Cath Kidston) and use glass jars (John Lewis) or clear boxes (Muji) to store buttons, ribbons and trimmings. Pin fabric swatches on a memo board (Pins and Ribbons).

And to create craft corner, combine a desk with a drawer unit (Ikea) and a memo board above.

For more ideas, take a look at this craft room photo gallery and see more decorating videos at Housetohome.co.uk/tv.

    Curlew Country

    by  • 27/11/2009 • Country moment, Country style • 4 Comments

One of the best things about autumn is relaxed weekends with family and the chance to cosy up at home while we look forward to Christmas. I love to visit Curlew Country, where blogger Steph is enjoying every minute of the changing seasons, decorating her home with vintage finds and taking her two children to see the Christmas lights switched on in the market town of Leek, Staffordshire. See her lovely pictures of the twinkling lights and her boys gazing up at the Christmassy window displays…
