    The comfort factor

    country living room

On chilly winter’s days, we just want to hibernate with warm comforting fabrics and decorate with pops of colour to brighten things up. And here’s a cosy country living room that combines toasty woollen fabrics and bursts of this season’s must-have mustard to give a lift to the ever-popular grey palette.

Oriental-inspired rustic wallpaper creates an eyecatching feature wall that is enhanced with a layered window treatment. Cosy woollen curtains (in Naturally Deepdale in Ivory) and stunning checked woollen Roman blinds (in Naturally Hawes fabric in Natural) are sure to keep draughts at bay.

Make the hero piece of the room a stylish sofa – this one is upholstered in a checked plaid-like woollen fabric (Naturally Thorpe in Taupe) for a nod to Highlands style, while plain seats in Naturally Deepdale fabric in Mushroom add a calming touch. Then introduce a Geometric Multiblock throw and cushions in Mustard for that extra dash of pizzazz.

Industrial elements such as the floorlamp and metal trunk table give a modern country twist, while more traditional country elements such as mellow wooden furniture and flooring is used to ground the scheme.

A clever tip is to use a large mirror propped against the wall to reflect light back into the room and make it appear more spacious.

    Handmade and beautiful

    Peris and Corr group

From an inspiring setting on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, Dyfrig Peris and Jennie Corr of Peris & Corr hand print their eclectic designs onto must-have cushions, lampshades, ceramics and stationery. The range includes bold patterns based on traditional Welsh blankets, hand-drawn typography and hand-painted motifs. We asked them to stop by for a quick chat…

What made you want to become designers?
We both studied Fine Art painting at university. Designing and printing our own products was a way of continuing to be creative after graduating.

Describe the design and making process.
All of our designs start off in sketchbooks – we draw everything by hand then scan and clean them up on the computer but try to keep a hand-drawn feel.

    What inspires you?
Snowdonia’s amazing scenery and interesting wildlife is all around us. When we started out we used drawings of animals and plants in our designs, but these days the countryside influence in our work is more to do with colours. Paintings, fine-art prints and mid-century patterns inspire us, too.

What’s the essence of your designs?
We try and keep our designs as simple as possible. We spend a lot of time drawing and are always drawn to the most simple and bold designs.

What do you love about what you do?
Being able to design and create everything in-house is great, plus we have the freedom of being self-employed. If it’s a nice day we can just take the afternoon off and go for a walk or bike ride.

    What’s your business ethos?
It’s important that we source all our products as ethically as possible, only using FSC-certified recycled paper for our notebooks and natural or organic fabric for our textile products. We print using water-based inks.

    What’s next?
We hope to move to a new, bigger workshop in the next few months so we can get a new printing table that will allow us to print fabric by the metre.

    Meet Nikki Szabo…

    by  • 26/11/2014 • Country business, Country style • 0 Comments

Nikki Szabo style setter | Country Days | Country Homes and Interiors

Nikki Szabo’s country fabric collections go down a treat here at Country Days. Light-washed watercolours of cute country critters sit beautifully against natural fabrics in subtle pastel shades, creating timeless designs for curtains, cushions and more.

What made you want to become a designer?
I set up a curtain-making business with my mother and, over time, I came to realise there was a big demand for beautiful and original fabric prints. I got out my paintbox, started designing and it went from there! I’m most creative at night so the freedom of working for myself is brilliant. I love the hands-on process of printing the fabrics too.

    What inspires you?
I spend a lot of time wandering around flea markets, and often come across unusual objects. Many of my designs have also been inspired by nature.

What ethos do you work by?
I really care for our environment. I only use lovely natural cotton and linen blend fabrics which are all digitally printed to order in my small studio in Chobham, Surrey. Our eco-friendly pigment dyes are water based, solvent free and environmentally gentle.  We print the exact amount needed to fulfil each order, so there is no unnecessary wastage of fabric or inks.

    Describe your favourite country moment.
I love spending time by the sea. I often take myself away for the weekend, book into a local dog-friendly hotel (my pup Pixie has to go everywhere with me!) and spend time meeting friends, relaxing and sketching.

    What’s next?
I’m currently working on a floral collection. I visited Kew Gardens Summer Festival in September and picked up loads of inspiration – I can’t wait to share it with everyone!

Describe your creative style in three words.
    Fluid, underworked and spontaneous.

    Meet Astrid Weigel

    by  • 10/09/2014 • Country business, Country style • 0 Comments

Astrid Weigel Style Setter | Country Days | Country Homes and Interiors

Working from her studio in Ayrshire, Scotland, Astrid Weigel makes all her pieces by hand, ensuring care and attention goes into each and every one.

Tell us a little bit about what you do.
I make home accessories and wall art using my own hand-printed fabrics. I like to keep things simple by printing in a monochromatic palette before adding colour and texture with appliqué and stitching.

    What’s your business ethos?
I’m a one woman operation so I realise how important it is to support other small British companies. For my next set of cushions, I’ve sourced some lovely linen woven right here in Scotland by one of the country’s last remaining mills. I hate any kind of waste, so every last scrap of fabric is used for something.

    What inspires you?
Nature is the one recurring theme in my work – I enjoy country walks, pottering in my garden, watching birds out the window. I’m so fortunate to have beautiful views from our home. It’s lovely to observe the arrival of each new season with the small gradual changes that it brings.

    Describe your favourite country moment.
I hear owl hoots all the time but had never  spotted the culprit… until the other night! I opened my bedroom window and there he was, sitting on the garage roof. We eyed each other up for a few seconds before he flew away. I went to bed a happy lady!

What’s your creative style in three words?
    Illustrative, bold and modern-rustic.

We chat to designer maker Helen Round

    by  • 03/09/2014 • Country business, Country style • 0 Comments

Style Setter Helen Round | Country Days | Country Homes and Interiors magazine

Helen Round combines state of the art digital printing with traditional hand printing techniques to turn her drawings into vibrant textiles and homewares including cushions, lampshades and tea towels.

    What inspires your designs?
Living and working in Cornwall is a continuous source of inspiration. My studio is perched on the top of a hill, with views down through the village to the River Tamar. This timeless view is one I constantly revisit when considering new designs.

    What’s your business ethos?
I am passionate about keeping things local…. from the careful sourcing of materials and the use of environmentally friendly inks, to the small busy team in the village who help me to create the collections.

    What’s your working space like?
My purpose built studio, where I hand print all of my linen, is at the top of my garden. It’s a large bright airy space, with floor to ceiling glass on two sides,  cedar paneling and a tin roof. The wood burner keeps it toasty in winter!

What’s your life outside of work like?
When I have time off, I nip down to the beach. If it’s warm enough, I enjoy a swim or paddle my kayak around the bay. Alternatively, on cooler days, the coastal paths are a place I love to wander, taking photos for my sketch book along the way.

Describe your creative style in three words.
    Natural, calm and simplistic.
