The most lovely surprises don’t always look good on first impression. The sweet chestnut with its spiny exterior is a good Autumn example. I spent a happy hour with my six-year-old son on Saturday collecting these sometimes soggy, sometimes spiky ‘cupules’ from the local woods. Broken open the gleaming nuts were like little nuggets of treasure inside.
We hot-footed it home and roasted them on the fire that night. Perfect!Tweet
