Make a paper Christmas tree decoration

    by  • 27/10/2010 • Country craft • 3 Comments

Here at Country Homes & Interiors it’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas!

To break you in gently, I’ve picked out this lovely Christmas tree make from our up-and-coming December issue. It’s made from plain card and patterned paper with button eyes and a ribbon hanger.

It’s so easy to make, just follow the instructions and choose card and paper in colours and patterns that will suit your decorating scheme. Get the kids to help and you’ll have a flock of Christmas birds before you know it! For more lovely seasonal makes ideas have a look at our sister site House to Home.

Pretty paper decorations make a lovely addition to a traditional tree.

Concertina-fold a square of patterned paper and push through the cardboard bird template.

    Linwood weaves

    by  • 22/10/2010 • Country style • 0 Comments

Now that the cold weather has set in I’m really drawn to this new ‘Kilim’ collection from Linwood. The rich colours and warming textures are inspired by original Kilim rugs. They have shown them off perfectly here on statement chairs and heavy draped curtains. Made from 100% natural fibres the collection includes 3 designs in a range of colourways.

Linwood Kilim fabrics, £99.90 a metre.

I had a lovely look around the Lewis & Wood pop-up shop at 57 Elizabeth Street, SW1 today. Usually based at Woodchester Mill in Gloucestershire, this quintessentially English  interiors company is showcasing its beautiful range of country fabrics and wallpapers across three floors of a Belgravia townhouse, until the end of November. ‘It was an opportunity we couldn’t resist,’ says owner Stephen Lewis.

I love the eclectic and charming spirit of this company.

    Make mini pumpkin lanterns

    by  • 20/10/2010 • Country craft, Country style • 1 Comment

Get a head start on your Halloween celebrations and be inspired by these pretty pumpkin and squash lanterns, made by Deputy Editor Sara Bird. Using Munchkin pumpkins and super-small squashes, simply slice off the top and scoop out the insides. (Reserve the flesh for cooking – see our October issue pg 27 for some quick and delicious recipes). Cut a decorative pattern with an apple corer or knife and place a tealight inside, trimming the candle to fit if necessary. Light, then pop the top back on and place on a window sill or at the front door to give a stylishly spooky greeting for guests.

I popped along to the one of the new John Lewis At Home stores last week. These stores in Croydon, Poole, and soon to come to Tunbridge Wells (opens 11 November) and Swindon (opens 28 October) are a one-stop shop for furniture, furnishing accessories, electrical and home technology. Beautifully brought together under one roof – these are a must for home lovers!

PS…I particularly loved the cushion section at Croydon but then I am a bit of a cushion queen, are you?

Rowan at Liberty for Wool Week

by  • 13/10/2010 • Country craft, Country moment, Country style • 2 Comments

Last Tuesday I mentioned the first ever National Wool Week starting on 11th October, part of HRH The Prince of Wales’s Campaign for Wool that promotes the use of British wool. Lovely Liberty kicked off its sheepy contribution with the arrival of a small flock of willow Herdwick sheep, let loose to browse around the store:

The Herdy Flock arrive at Liberty for Wool Week

Hurry along to Liberty’s third floor before 17th October to see an excellent exhibition of work by textile students at the Royal College  of Art using Rowan’s 100% British Wool yarns. We especially loved Claire-Anne O’Brien‘s super-chunky knitted chair.

And Rowan is marking Wool Week by launching its British Sheep Breeds Homeware Collection of knitting patterns for gorgeous cushions and throws, using its British Sheep Breeds undyed yarns – the lovely soft neutral tones are the actual colours of the sheep they come from. Time to get knitting and give fleece a chance!

Despite the sun shining this weekend, here are all the Autumn things that I have done:

    Made soup

Put the winter duvet on the bed

    Baked gingerbread

Made leaf pictures with the kids

    Worn my wellies

    Lit the fire

    Put away my sandals…

What change-of-season things have you been doing?

    Autumn leaves
