    The V&A shop

    by  • 30/04/2010 • Country craft, Country style • 0 Comments

    I find the V&A shop so inspiring. It offers an exciting emporium of home wares, textiles, books and accessories; often influenced by different exhibitions throughout the museum. I love the latest goodies that tie in with their current Quilts: 1700 – 2010 exhibition, running until July 4th. If you’re yearning to express your creativity this is a great place to start:

    I spent a couple of hours with Charlie Marshall from thesleeproom.com yesterday. Charlie is passionate about beds and beautiful ones at that. Perfect for country-style bedrooms, you’ll find a lovely range of French, upholstered and inlaid styles all at very reasonable prices. My favourite was the India. I love the soft French grey and bone inlay headboard…

    Also check out the tired bear on the website – it’s really cute!

    Simply the best!

    Many congratulations to Vivienne Ayers, our super-talented Houses Editor, who brings the best country houses to the pages of Country Homes & Interiors every single month. At the annual IPC Editorial Awards on Thursday evening, Viv won the prestigious award for Best Commissioned Photography.  This award is given to the magazine that has the best and most original pictures.

    Here’s what the judges said, ‘Consistently on brand and technically excellent, this entry was “so well delivered that it makes you want to climb into the pages and experience the subjects first hand”. ‘

    Do you like poetry?

    by  • 22/04/2010 • Country moment • 3 Comments

    I’m not sure if poetry is really at home in this blog (let me know what you think) but I came across this lovely poem this week. In a world dominated by ash clouds and prime ministerial debates, it seems to sum up the ‘spirit of the moment’ in the countryside in a really simple and beautiful way.

    For winter’s rains and ruins are over,

    And all the season of snows and sins;

    The days dividing lover and lover,

    The light that loses, the night that wins;

    And time remembered is grief forgotten,

    And frosts are slain and flowers begotten,

    And in green underwood and cover

    Blossom by blossom the spring begins.

    Algernon Charles Swinburne

    I would also like to dedicate this to writer, journalist and Country Homes & Interiors
    contributor Elspeth Thompson, who sadly left this world recently. I think she would
    have enjoyed this poem.

    Tree Fall Design

    by  • 21/04/2010 • Country craft, Country style • 2 Comments

    I’ve just discovered designer Manda McGrory’s lovely blog TreeFall Design. She makes beautiful home accessories and quilts, often from vintage fabrics, and her love of gorgeous textiles is really infectious. Here are her latest discoveries, currently kept in her ‘must actually make something with them’ pile (wonder how many of us have one of those!):

    I just love lavender and, on Sunday, I indulged my obsession again with a trip to the garden centre to buy even more. I happily spent the afternoon with my son, Jamie, digging holes for them in our dry, poor and pebbly soil. They look a bit small and tufty at the moment but I know that in a few short months they’ll be happily producing their scented spikes of delicate purple flowers. Mmmm… can’t wait.

    Birdsongs and wordsongs

    by  • 16/04/2010 • Country style • 1 Comment

    Now that finally we can wake to the sweet sound of morning birdsong, this new collection from Random Retail is very apt. Owner and textile designer, Joy, draws inspiration from her love of beautiful typography from old posters and words from songs her husband once wrote. I love the vintage yet modern feel to these screen printed cushions.
